Robert John Thornton (1768–1837) was an English physician, botanist, and publisher best known for The Temple of Flora, one of the most celebrated botanical works ever produced. Combining science, art, and poetry, Thornton sought to illustrate the beauty and wonder of the natural world through a series of extraordinary flower portraits.

Unlike traditional botanical illustrations, Thornton’s flowers were placed in dramatic landscapes filled with atmosphere and symbolism.
